The Gadget Show Live 2012

The Gadget Show Live 2012 has been on this week and as always it was a chance for a range of electronic manufacture companies to showcase their latest products.

This year has seen a range of interesting products on display such as latex clothing that utilises neuro-technology to light up depending on the wearer’s level of concentration. There have been many executive toys on show to assist in transport, such as the solowheel which is going to retail at a bank breaking £1,899 and reaches speeds of 12mph and SpinKix which travel at a slightly less 8mph but cost a lot less. As well as new technology there are also improvements on existing tech such as cameras with improved capabilities.

A great technology on display from electronic manufacture giant LG is their dual play technology for use with games and their 3D TVs. The tech works by splitting the 3D imagery from the TV into two separate images and comes supplied with two sets of glasses. The glasses show the different images from the screen, so one player sees his screen and the other sees theirs. This allows multiplayer gaming to take place without players cheating and seeing the other players screen. Brilliant.

Flexible Displays

We’re always interested in different forms of electronic manufacture and this week flexible displays caught our eye.

LG revealed that they are now moving ahead with mass production of flexible plastic e-paper displays. The device measures 6inches and features a 1024 x 768 display, weighing in at just 14g. One of the biggest drawbacks though is that the screen is monochrome.

So what are LG hoping to achieve with this flexible black and white device? Well they hope it will help to further improve and popularise the electronic-book market with a lighter and thinner alternative to large E-readers such as the Kindle and Kobo. Whether this flexible technology will take off is yet to be seen but if the technology develops to point when you can simply roll up a digital display and place it in your pocket then it will be very useful to many people.

Clever timing

The clever fellows over at WyoInnovation have knocked up an innovative new way of telling the time using an Arduino unit and a little electronicsl know-how. Aptly dubbed – “The WORDuino”.

We’re pretty sure this nifty little clock should win some sort of design award! A wonderful word-based clock using a series of LED’s, some programming knowledge and the resources to manufacture the casing and circuit board.

All this adds together to produce an entirely open source clock that would make a nice addition to any wall.

We hope you enjoyed this interesting find.

Until next time, The PCB train team

Musical PCB!

You might think of PCB’s as a pretty standard and plain necessity for a lot of modern electronic devices, but they can be so much more!

A musician known as ‘Moldover‘ has taken it one step further… He must have sat down one day and listed all the possible uses for a Printed Circuit Board and thought – “I know! Let’s make it a standalone instrument AND an album case aswell!”

Moldover’s creativity has put the spark back into PCB’s for a lot of people! It’s a fantastic use of our favourite electronic component; and we regret not thinking of it sooner!

Printed Circuit Board Furniture?

I know! Printed Circuit Board Furniture!?

It looks very cool (if you’re as PCB obsessed as we are). Below we have a printed circuit board bench created by Doug Chase

Now while we don’t have these at PCB Train HQ yet they look perfect for our needs :)

As technology evolves with time, old things become obsolete and are replaced by the new ones, but nothing in this world can replace the sweet memories of your first vehicle, cellphone or even computer for that matter.

GuyInMilwaukee, who found it difficult to part with his first computer, came up with an ingenious idea to keep it for life.

He converted his late 80s machine into a stunning table that he calls the Computer Board Table!

Organic, Biodegradable PCB (Printed Circuit Boards)

A mobile phone that biodegrades into a sunflower and a printed circuit board made out of lasagne?!

These are just two of the innovative examples of green mobile phone technology revealed in a new Science Museum exhibition opening in London on March 29 2006.
