Technology in 2014

Modern technology is advancing at a brisk rate and 2014 has absolutely no intention of thwarting that. From speaking household appliances to printing robots, here is our review of the top 5 of what’s what in the gadget world in 2014 and, equally, what to expect soon.

1. LG Home Chat

For many of us, the prospect of conversational household appliances was only viable in 1970’s science fiction novels; where a rather optimistic prediction of the future was prevalent. However, thanks to LG the once optimistic vision of the future may materialise. The Home Chat Service, created by LG, allows users to issue commands to their smart appliances such as a washing machine of fridge. According to LG, you will, quite literally, be able to ask your washer “What’re you doing?” or your fridge “Do we have beer?” and they will respond just as a person would. Naturally, the service only works with LG devices and software alike. Nevertheless it’s a rather large technological advance and presents a firm basis for future convenience for your average homeowner.

Pro

A convenient and beneficial control of your home. The idea of ‘forgetting to put washing on’ or ‘forgetting chicken at the supermarket’ will cease to exist.

Con

The insecurities surrounding phone security will be more intense as in the wrong hands; one can control another’ s home.

 Pricing

Free with LG household appliances, presumably.

2. Polaroid Socialmatic

No longer will the prospect of having to lug around a large, ugly, photo taking box exist as the Polaroid Socialmatic combines camera, a world redound printing process and comfortable size.  Developed by Polaroid for autumn release, the Socialmatic is, essentially, a smaller version of a Polaroid camera. The camera will have a 14 megapixel front and 2 megapixel rear camera, and will run an Android based operating system with a 4.5 inch touch screen for easier navigation. As is famous with Polaroid, The camera will print 2×3 inch photos using Zink Zero Ink technology; a service which makes your photos smudge proof, water resistant and tear resistant. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up like the IM1836 camera.

Pro

You don’t have to carry round a large and ugly looking plastic box when you want to take a photo; which is undoubtedly inconvenient when taking trips anywhere.

Con

Predictably, the paper needed to actually print the photos is costly; estimated at around £17.53 for 80 sheets.

Pricing

The pricing for the camera is yet to be released by Polaroid.

3. Leo The Maker Prince

It appears the days of Mister Men have long gone as Leo The Maker Prince makes an exciting entrance to the world of children’s books. Leo The Maker Prince is a storybook that teaches children about 3D printing by following Carla and Leo’s journey through Brooklyn, New York. Leo is a walking, talking robot who happens to be able to print (in plastic) any object that Carla draws. The other robots in the story also have their own special capabilities such as H1-H0 who prints in jewellery and Sinclair who can find and print objects from a huge catalog of designs. Producing anything from H1-H0’s unique looking jewellery to Leo and Carla’s sheep, this is a truly special book for children and adults alike. Not only does the capability of the books printing process make it interesting, original and exciting, but also the story and thought behind the book is equally as interesting and warming.

Pro

An investment in an original and interesting idea whilst learning about the modern and, possibly, misunderstood process of 3D printing.

Con

Some aspects have to be downloaded from a computer. It’s not that clever!

Pricing

A reasonable £9.50, according to Amazon.

4. Logitech Powershell

A gaming controller for your IPhone that isn’t crippling to hold, the Powershell by Logitech offers a comfortable and reliable alternative to generic gaming. The controller is made solid, with a rubbery surface that’s, as stated, comfortable to hold. It’s also sturdy and compact enough to be stored loosely in a bag or pocket. Thankfully, the controller is built to slot the iPhone directly inside, without having to pull the controller apart to fit it in and whilst plugged into the controller, the normal functions of the phone remain; you can still use the lock button and head phone jack you’ll be glad to know.

Pro

Unlike others, the Powershell is comfortable to hold and use.

Con

Coming in at a whopping £59.99, it’s not exactly a cheap alternative to generic gaming.

Pricing

£59.99, unfortunately.

5. Panomo Camera

A very exciting prospect for September is the Panomo Camera. Created by Jonas Pfeil, the Panomo is a revolutionary picture-taking device that allows you to take a picture from every possible angle. Panomo, quite literally, doesn’t miss a trick as its small yet powerful 108-megapixel, 36 cameras capture a photo from every direction. Unlike other camera’s, it not only captures the events of which you wish to photograph, but even the aspects which you may have missed; using 360 degree photo taking. Designed in the shape of a ball, the Panomo works by being thrown in the air; and at its highest point, it takes photos, simultaneously, from its cameras. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the Panomo allows you to connect with a smart phone or tablet after use and view the panoramic photos by moving the smart phone or tablet in a direction of choice. The Panomo isn’t due to be released until September but we’re sure when it does, it will make an outstanding impression.

Pro

Taking the actual photos seems fun; as you have the chance to throw a ball, in the air. Also, the means to view the photos in post-production (connecting a tablet or phone) is very interesting.

Con

It’s reported that to pre order a Panomo, it will cost you $499 (£291.51)- not for everyone then, it would seem.

Pricing

Official pricing hasn’t been released, but pre order is costing an estimated $499 (£291.50).
